Respite Care – Tyler’s Home for Kids

Children at Tyler's Home for Kids

Tyler’s Home for Kids began with George and Liz McKinnon and their infant son Tyler, whose disability was the impetus behind the facility. Their vision of Tyler’s Home became a reality in 2000 through the efforts of many community volunteers, businesses and agencies.

A child with a disability can physically, emotionally and financially drain a family’s resources. These families often feel isolated or overwhelmed by the child’s unrelen ting needs. Respite care gives families a chance to relax and re-energize, knowing their child is safe and well cared for.

Respite care also increases family stability, decreases stress and helps prevent needless out-of-home placement.

Tyler’s Home for Kids offers the following respite services:

  • Licenses Respite Care, providing a much needed break from care-giver’s daily demands and responsibilities.
  • Care to kids with disabilities ranging in ages from infant to 17 years. Stays may be for short drop-in care, overnight, or longer, dependent on circumstances.
  • Based upon location and availability, specialized transportation may be provided through Tyler’s Home.
  • Training, professional staff also available for in-home respite for all ages.

Benefits of Respite Care include:

  • Increased family stability and strengthened ability of families to care for their child at home.
  • Allow for more family interactions and social activities.
  • Decreased stress, depression, chronic care-giver illness, and possible abuse and neglect.
  • Enhanced coping skills.
